Jewish Festival Shavuot at the Dor Kemmyn Peace Field – Sunday 1st June 2025 at 2.00 pm
On Sunday, 1st June at 2.00 pm at the Dor Kemmyn Peace Field, Penmount we will be sharing in the Jewish Festival of Shavuot.
Jeremy Jacobson, Chairman of Kehillat Kernow, writes: “Shavuot, or Festival of Weeks, comes 50 days, i.e. seven weeks, after the celebration of Pesach. It brings together three things: an early harvest festival during which the first fruits of the wheat harvest are offered to God, a celebration of the giving of the Torah at Sinai and the the story of Ruth, which a Moabite woman converts to Judaism, eventually marries a princely Israelite man, Boaz, and so becomes the great grandmother of King David. This is particularly significant, since the Moabites were for many years the enemies of Israel. It is customary to read the Book of Ruth and to celebrate by eating milky puddings.
On Sunday, 1st June, we will give a dramatised reading of the story, say a little more about Shavuot and celebrate with some cheesecake or similar.”
All are welcome to share this special time together.
